1. What’s the solution ?
Soil in a garden gets washed away with the water due to the slope of the land.
Ans: Due to the slope, soil gets washed away with the water flow. To prevent this we plant grass, smaller shrubs or saplings etc on the slope.

How should roads and footpaths be built to make rainwater seep into the ground ?
Ans: The construction of roads and the footpaths must be done in a manner that would help the rainwater pass on the underground drainage instead of getting accumulated over the road.
3. Answer the following questions.
(a) What conditions prevail during a famine ?
Ans: 1) During a famine, the water level falls in rivers, wells, lakes, bunds and dams. Some of these may even go dry.
2) The land also dries up due to evaporation.
3) Humans and animals suffer from scarcity of water.
4) There is no water for agriculture.
(b) What works are undertaken to make water available even after the rainy season ?
Ans: 1) Several methods are used to make rainwater seep into the soil.
2) Large dams can be built. But that may not be possible in all places.
3) In that event, the government and the people come together to undertake several works such as building smaller reservoirs, contour bunding, stopping the water of the smaller streams by constructing bunds or bandharas, etc.
(c) Why is it necessary to stop rainwater ?
Ans: 1) To meet the whole year’s need for water, rainwater must be stopped.
2) When it is stopped, it percolates into the soil.
3) As the ground water storage increases, trees get water. Wells, too, get enough water and the land can be cultivated.
(d) What is meant by water management ?
Ans: 1) It is very important to use water carefully
2) To stop rainwater from flowing away, to make it seep into the ground or to collect it in tanks.
3) Taking steps to ensure that rainwater will be available even in the period after the rainy season is called ‘water management’.
4. True or false? Correct the wrong statements.
(a) We get rainwater throughout the year.
Ans: False, We get rainwater only four months of rainy season.
(b) During a famine, the government moves people and animals temporarily to safe places.
Ans: True
