Q1. What’s the solution?
(a) The papads have become soft and moist.
Ans: 1) Moist papads should be place in the hot sun for drying.
2) Later, these papads shall be stored in an airtight container.

(b) Fruits like mangoes, amlas, guavas and vegetables like peas, onions, tomatoes, fenugreek are needed all year round. They are available in plenty only in certain seasons.
Ans: 1) Mangoes can be preserved by making their pickles. 
2) Peas can be peeled and preserved in refrigerator.
3) Amla can be preserved by making churna.
4) Tomatoes can be preserved by making tomato sauce. All fruits can be preserved using suitable method and then we can use throughout the year.


Q2. Use your brain power ! 
Semolina (shevaya) do not get spoiled for a very long time. But kheer made from them spoils easily. Why is this so?
Ans: While making semolina they are dried in the hot sun. They do not have moisture or any part of water in them. So they can be stored for a long time. But kheer is made using milk and water. Milk is perishable substance. Therefore, kheer made from semolina spoils easily.

(a) What are the different methods of preserving food?
Ans: Drying, cooling, boiling, placing in airtight cans and using food preservatives substances are the different methods of preserving food.

(b) Why do we avoid eating food that has got spoiled?
Ans: 1) There are harmful micro-organisms are present in the food.
2) It can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach ache.
3) The spoiled food has a bad smell.
4) It can be dangerous for our health to eat spoiled food.

(c) Why do we make jams from fruits?
Ans: 1) Fruits are perishable.
2) They do not last long.
3) For preserving them, food preservatives like sugar are added in them. Sugar is used to make jams which can be stored for a longer time. Therefore, we make jams from fruits.

(d) What are preservatives?
Ans: 1) Certain substances are added to jams and pickles to preserve them for a long time. They are called preservatives.
2) Sugar, salt, hing, mustard, oil and vinegar are examples of preservatives.

(e) Find out the names of the different spices. Also find out which part of their plant they are.
Ans: 1) Cinnamon (Dalchini): part of stem of plant
2) Cardamom (Velchi): part of fruit
3) Bell leaves: leave of plant
4) Coriander seeds: Seeds of a plant
