6. Write answers to the following.
(a) What are the parts of a plant ?
Ans: The various parts of a plant:
1) Flower : This is the most attractive part of a plant. The flower is an important means of reproduction.
2) Stem : The height, shape and size of a plant depends upon the stem. The stem carries out the functions of production, conduction and storage of food.
3) Leaf : The leaf is flat. It plays an important role in the production of food.
4) Fruit : Fruits have different shapes. Fruits contain one or more seeds.
5) Root : Roots hold the soil firmly and anchor the plant. The main functions of the root are to absorb and transport water and nutrients from the soil.
(b) What are the functions of the root ?
Ans: The functions of the roots are as follows:
1) Roots hold the soil firmly and anchor the plant.
2) They also help in the absorption of water and nutrients from the soil.
(c) Why is it necessary to classify living things ?
Ans: 1) Classification ensures the study of interrelationship between various groups.
2) It help us to study many organisms at some time.
3) It makes the study of living organisms easier.
(d) What are the criteria used to classify living things ?
Ans: Living things can be classified on the basis of similarities and differences in their structure, their organs and other characteristics.
(e) Tell some characteristics of creepers.
Ans: Plants which cannot stand upright and spread on the ground are called creepers.
Characteristics of creepers are as follows:
1) Their stem is very flexible soft and green.
2) It grows rapidly with the help of a support.
(f) Explain the characteristics of herbs with two examples.
Ans: Following are characteristics of herbs:
1) They grow upto the size of 1 to 1.5 metres.
2) They have green and flexible stems.
3) They can live few months or up to two years.
4) Ex. Tulsi, Mint etc.
(g) On the basis of which criteria will you classify plants and animals ?
Ans: 1) Plants are classified on the basis of their height and the shape of stems, period of life cycle and habitat.
2) Animals are classified on the basis of the cell structure, vertebral column, method of reproduction and habitat.
(h) What protects the bodies of animals?
Ans: There are different mechanisms by which animals protect themselves from their predators.
1) Some organisms are covered by hard shells to protect themselves. Ex. tortoise etc.
2) Organisms like chameleon and frogs can change their colours according to the surrounding environment.
3) Animals which are found in very cold regions have a thick layer of fat under the skin and it helps them to protect from cold.
